Rivers State is a haven of vintage shops and some of the interesting markets in Nigeria. There are several places where one can get cool thrift items in Port Harcourt, this article acts as a guide to these places and gives tips on how to get the best from your shopping adventure. Here are some of the best in the state.

Mini Rules For A Successful Thrift Shopping

  • Early birds get the best worms.

It is important to note that early birds get the best worm and this is the first rule of thrift shopping, the earlier you get there, the better your shopping experience. The crowd is less and you are at the advantage of picking the best items before anyone else. Be a wise birdie and get your fashionable self to the market on time.

  • The patient dog doesn’t eat the fattest bone.

The hustle is usually double the fun during thrift shopping and there is no place for the virtue of patience. There’s no courtesy rule for first comers, good things go to those who go for what they like.

  • When in Rome behave like a Roman.

Do not walk around with a JJC tag on your forehead. Your adaptation and blending skills would become useful during thrift shopping. Locals love to take advantage of anyone who seems new and look lost. I’d recommend you tag along with a friend who has gone thrift shopping before, especially if you’re trying a new place/market; take someone who is more familiar with that market scenery.

  • Two heads are better than one

It is always better to thrift shop with a friend, especially if it’s a first time. Other than having the person act as a guide, you’d definitely need someone to help carry the goodies home.

Keeping in mind the mini guide rules for a successful thrift shopping, here’s a list of popular places to get the best thrift items in Rivers State:

Oil mill market

This is one of Rivers State’s busiest markets; you can get everything from clothes, food items to household utensils. It is a very popular market and you shouldn’t get lost while trying to locate it, if you ask for directions. Market days are usually Wednesdays every week.

Creek Road market

Personally this is my favorite place to go thrift shopping, especially for clothes and bags. There are thousands of vendors and a variety of items to choose from, market days are usually Fridays and Mondays.

Mile 1 Park

This is popularly called Park. It usually runs every day of the week except on Sundays. You can get your fashion wears and accessories at affordable prices from here.

Leventis bus stop

This is a mini market adjacent to the popular Leventis bus stop on Aba Road. Cloth items and shoes are the most commonly sold items at this place. The market opens every day except on Sundays.

Visiting any of the places mentioned above would be a rewarding adventure for any fashionista. Don’t forget to apply the mini rules. Happy thrift shopping.
