Mogadishu is the capital city of Somalia. Mogadishu is the most populous city of Somalia. Located in the coastal Banadir region on the Somali Sea, because of its unique positioning, the city has served as an important port for millennia. Originally inhabited by hunter-gatherers. The city was the capital of Italian Somaliland in the colonial period. After the Somali Republic became independent in 1960, Mogadishu became known and promoted as the White Pearl of the Indian Ocean. Since then, the city has been a major battleground in the Somali civil war, seeing various militias fought for control of the city, which ravaged the country from 1991 until 2012. Read on to discover some of the top things to see and do in Mogadishu.

The Mosque of Islamic Solidarity is a mosque located in Mogadishu, Somalia. The mosque was built in 1976 with funds from the Saudi government during the reign of King Fahd. Right across the Indian Ocean, is the masjid with a 10,000 capacity to accommodate worshippers. A must on the list if you’re interested in visiting Mogadishu.

The Mogadishu Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral located in Mogadishu, Somalia. It served as the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Mogadiscio until 1991, when it was torn down by bombing. The cathedral is an old historic italian architecture built in 1928 by the Italian authorities in the former Italian Somaliland, much of which has been destroyed by Islamic radicals.

The Bakaara Market is the busiest and largest open market in Mogadishu, and in entire Somalia. The market was created in late 1972. The market is packed full with supplement with variety of trades and daily life fit for daily life in Somalia, from farm produce to illicit activities, such as forged Somali  and other nationalities passports processed within minutes. You can find just about anything in this market, explore responsibly. Just don’t get lost!

The tomb of unknown soldier is a national monument built 60 years ago. The monument was created in honour of the Somali men and women who died in defense of the Somali Republic. It’s popularly known as Daljirka Dahsoon, and it is an important landmark in Mogadishu. A historic place that captures the tragedies that Somalians have lived.
